Now let’s jump in with an often misunderstood sign.

Everyone thinks they can read a Cancer, but most have no idea how deep their waters run. One thing we can all agree on- they need to get a hold of their feelings.

Cancer constellation is located in the northern sky. Its name means “the crab” in Latin.

Cancer is the faintest of the 12 zodiac constellations. Its symbol is ♋. The constellation was first catalogued by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century.

Cancer contains a number of famous deep sky objects, among them the open cluster Praesepe, also known as the Beehive Cluster (Messier 44), the open cluster Messier 67, and the interacting spiral galaxies NGC 2535 and NGC 2536.

Cancer is the 31st largest constellation in the sky, occupying an area of 506 square degrees. It lies in the second quadrant of the northern hemisphere (NQ2) and can be seen at latitudes between +90° and -60°. The neighboring constellations are Canis MinorGeminiHydraLeoLeo Minor, and Lynx.

The Cardinal Quality– Cancer as a leader

Cancers are one of the four cardinal signs.

The cardinal quality occurs once at the beginning of each season + once in each of the four elements. It indicates leadership, new beginnings, and a desire to see deep transformation in the world.

Cancer is the cardinal sign of the water tribe + therefore its leader.

The leadership area for Cancer is resiliency, creativity, inspiration, and development of the soul. This is directly tied to their karmic responsibilities. On their life’s journey they will deal with emotions almost constantly, their own and other people’s, and this can be extremely taxing. Yet once a Cancer masters their coping skills you’ll find no one with better insight into how beautiful, dynamic, + vital love can be.

The most mature + successful cancers are here to remind us that passion + our relationships with others are vital parts of the human experience. Feelings are not something to be ignored in favor of logical sequencing- the two are intended to live in harmony.

If Cancer never masters their coping skills + embodies this lesson, they will succumb to the negative traits of their sign and essentially be moody + manipulative until their next life. Rest assured the universe will challenge them until they reach a breakthrough.

It is their karmic task to get in touch with, master, and see the beauty in emotions, and guide others to the same conclusion. They must equip themselves to cultivate emotional intelligence, with plenty of self-care and reflection.

Once they learn to work with their feelings, Cancers will often find themselves the fiercely protective leaders of warm, spiritual, and creative tribes.

cancer’s waters– movement obscures their depth

Water is mutable and fluid, and represents birth and death in the spiritual realm. If you pay close attention you will often find a fascination with this concept in water signs. The process of transformation + letting go often becomes a highly ritualized experience for them, and there’s often an ever present desire to improve themselves which borders on obsession.

Cancer is constantly evaluating their level of security, maturity, and usefulness, and changing their behavior in response. This leads to highly immersive and frequent transformations. This constant self-evaluation is also part of what makes them highly adaptable. At any given moment Cancer could be embracing a different persona to protect or improve upon themselves. This combined with experiencing the emotions of everyone around them leads to an almost constant state of flux.

Signs with the water quality who have not matured tend to become moody, false, and manipulative instead of adapting in healthier ways. When Cancers are manipulative, their desire is always to protect themselves from psychological influence as they are very sensitive themselves, by going on a false or passive aggressive defense. Many of them will flat out tell you that this is wrong, but sometimes their instinct.

The challenge for water signs is to learn the differences between defense and attack, transformation and false pretense. More than any other element, water signs may retreat into their mind when they should stand and fight, stand and fight when they should retreat, or break down and cry where they should show strength. They may fake it instead of making it, or get vindictive when their true desire is to work things out.

Cancers must learn when to be vulnerable, and when to hide + obscure, as they tend to be unpredictable as a mode of defense instead of strategic.

Sure, they can be moody, but if you play nice with cancers…you’ll see the benefits. They’re the sign most likely to come to your defense.
